Voted for by the public, the SPOTY award recognises excellence in sporting achievement, and is considered to be one of the most prestigious sporting awards in the UK.

The 2024 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award Nominees

In 2023, Lionesses goalkeeper Mary Earps was awarded BBC Sports Personality of the Year, owing to her impressive performance in the 2023 World Cup. A well-deserved award, especially given the now-famous penalty-save she executed in the final against Spain. This year, 2024, a range of athletes are nominated for the prestigious award.

Jude Bellingham

21-year-old Jude Bellingham makes the list after an impressive year at Real Madrid in La Liga. Bellingham scored 23 goals in total and celebrated the 5th year that Real Madrid have been crowned both Spanish and European champions in the same campaign. On an international level, Bellingham was a key member of an England side that reach the Euro 2024 final. In October, he was the first English player to break the top 3 at the Ballon d’Or. Known for his pace, dribbling, passing and finishing skills, Bellingham is widely regarded as one of the best players in the world, so his position on the list should surprise no-one.

Keely Hodgkinson

Olympic gold-medallist Keely Hodgkinson holds the world indoor best for the 600 metres, and was the 2021 and 2023 Diamond League 800m champion. After a near-miss that secured her a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics when she was just 19, Hodgkinson was not to be denied again and claimed the gold for the 800m at the Paris Olympics. It was Team GB’s first Olympic track title since Mo Farah’s 5000m and 10000m double in Rio in 2016 – arguably, the wins that scored Farah his own SPOTY Award in 2017. It’s absolutely no surprise that Keely is the royal favourite to win the award – but it doesn’t make it a a guarantee!

Luke Littler

17-year-old Luke Littler shot to stardom after a remarkable 12 months following his performance in the final of the PDC World Darts Championship. Littler has gone on to claim 10 senior PDC titles, and is currently the PDC World No. 4. Having played BDO and WDF events since he was 12, Littler is the youngest ever darts player to reach the PDC World Darts final. Littler’s earnings for 2024 have surpassed £1 million, and he’s on track to break the record for the most 180s in a season. Littler’s outstanding performance at such a young age have earned him his rightful place on both the SPOTY Award and the Young SPOTY Award nominees.

Joe Root

English cricketer Joe Root MBE made history in October by becoming the cricketer with the most runs scored in Test matches for England. Root’s achievement moved him into fifth place on the list of all-time highest run-scorers in Test cricket. With numerous accolades, including PCA Player of the Year in 2021 and Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2015, Root is one of the most decorated cricketers of his generation, and has certainly earned his place on the list of SPOTY nominees.

Sarah Storey

Britain’s most successful Paralympian, Sarah Storey DBE, won the 19th gold medal of her career at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Storey began her impressive career with two golds, three silvers and a bronze at the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics when she was just 14-years-old. At the 2012 London Olympics, she won Britain’s first gold medal in the women’s individual C5 pursuit. In the 2016 Rio Paralympics, Storey became Britain’s most successful female Paralympic athlete with her gold-medal win at the C5 3000m individual pursuit final. In Paris in 2024, she won the women’s road event for a fifth successive Paralympics. In total, Storey holds 39 world golds in her sport – more than enough to place her amongst the SPOTY Award finalists.

Alex Yee

2024 was a spectacular year for 26-year-old Alex Yee, after his gold in the Men’s Triathlon at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. With a bronze in the Triathlon Mixed Relay at the same event, plus a gold in the Triathlon Mixed Relay and a silver in the Men’s Triathlon at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Yee is the most successful triathlete in Olympic history. He is also a double World Championship medallist over the World Triathlon Championship Series, with a silver in 2022 and a bronze in 2021. You can’t very well hold an awards for the Sports Personality of the Year and leave out the most decorated Olympic triathlete of all time, can you?
