ELK Studios has a history of creating excellent Mexican-themed online slots, what with the Taco Brothers and Taco Brothers Saving Christmas online slots doing nicely in the popularity stakes. This time the award-winning Scandinavian outfit, part of the sprawling NYX Gaming Group, turns its attention to the theme of bullfighting in the Wild Toro slot. This time, though, the bull is the hero. And he means business.
Wild Toro is our eponymous hero – a suave-looking bull with a blade of grass between his teeth and a glint in his eye. He is doing battle across these reels with a malevolent Matador, Diaz Jr. Hang on a minute…Diaz. That rings a bell. Fo sho it does. Captain Diaz was the police chief harassing the residents of Santa Maria for their tacos and pesos in ELK’s Taco Brothers duo of slots. Turns out Diaz Jr. is the evil chief’s offspring. So looks like the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree.
This adventure is played across five reels and four rows, with ELK operating a 178 Ways To Win payout system rather than traditional fixed paylines. Our low-paying gaming symbols glittering in as a collection of coins – Gold, Silver and Bronze – while a Fan, a sword-skewered Orange and a Rose make up our high-payers. All the game symbols can appear stacked, bumping our base game shots at our 178 Ways pay system. As for Wild Toro and Diaz Jr., they make their plays in Wild Toro’s bonus features.
You can take the bull out of the wild but you can’t take the Wild out of the bull. Fortunately for us, that is. Landing Toro on reel 5 launches the Walking Wild feature, in which Toro walks across the reels, right-to-left, leaving Wilds in his wake. But who knows when a bull will charge? Even the best Matadors might not escape. Unfortunately for Diaz Jr. he isn’t one of the best Matadors. At any point Toro can charge in the Toro Goes Wild feature, triggered when we land a Matador during the Walking Wild feature. Toro charges across the reels to butt-out any Matador symbols, leaving a trail of Wilds in his wake for the re-spins that follow until all Matadors are defeated.
Aside from this random bonus feature, the shining Game Logo is our standard Wild symbol, substituting for all symbols except Toro and the Matador. But as with any bullfight, the Matador also plays his part. Landing three Matador symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4 triggers the Matador Re-spin Challenge. These three Matadors are frozen on the reels for three spins, with an additional free spin added for every extra sticky Matador that lands. This will continue ad nauseum as long as the Matadors keep coming, or until Toro beats them all away.
With three Wild bonus features, the Wild Toro online slot ticks all our bonus boxes while not shirking on the game-play. It’s always nice to see the bulls get one back on the Matadors, especially one as sneaky as Diaz Jr. Seeing him smirking on the reels is like a red rag to a bull.
