With six Sports Personality of the Year nominations announced last week, the prestigious awards ceremony took place at the BBC’s headquarters in Salford last night – Tuesday 17th December. SPOTY finalists list. From England and Real Madrid football king Jude Bellingham to royal darts sensation Luke Littler, the competition was fiercer than ever this year.
Third place went to England cricket star Joe Root. After becoming England’s record Test run scorer, and the world’s 5th, Root’s claim to third place for the SPOTY Award was more than deserved. Not only is he exceptional in Test cricket, but Root excels at One-Day International (ODIs) and T20 cricket. He’s known for his classical batting technique, solid footwork, and notable ability to anchor innings.
Second place for the SPOTY Award went to Luke Littler – arguably Hodgkinson’s biggest rival for the award. Littler became a household name after becoming the youngest ever player to reach the finals in the PDC World Darts Championship 2024 - at just 16 years old. Littler also provoked a resurgence of the sport, with a record high 3.7 million viewers tuning in to watch the final. This was easily Sky’s largest figure for a non-football sporting event. Littler didn’t go home empty handed, though, as he was named BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2024.
The BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024 Award was voted on by the public, and the public chose Keely Hodgkinson as their winner. She’s the fourth successive woman to win the award, after Mary Earps (2023), Beth Mead (2022) and Emma Raducanu (2021).
