You do wonder in amazement sometimes when you play an early slot title to see how far the gaming world has come. An Online game produced these days and called “Big Top Slot” would probably involve acrobats hurtling towards you in full 3D and contortionists twisting their way across your living room. Testament to Microgaming’s prowess in slot development, then, that this early title doesn’t have any of that but is well worth the play.
Gameplay
As with circuses of yesteryear, the main characters of this title are the traditional circus animals we may think of from our childhoods. If you don’t know what I’m talking about I’m betraying my age. Betraying this slot’s age are the nine paylines it operates – nine! Still, with the five reels populated by an acrobatic seal, an elephant riding a bicycle and a tiger in a top hat and a clown pulling a silly face, Microgaming have treated us to a kind-of walk through a circus Hall Of Fame.
10S through Aces make up the numbers and roll the game-play on speedily enough, though as a self-confessed circus fan I would definitely have liked to have some constant circus music rattling us through the base game. Good job I’ve got scores of it on my iTunes, then. (Other music libraries are available, though none are as good.)
Bonuses
This is such an early slot title that there aren’t any extra bonus features as such, other than the Joker Wild and Monkey Scatter symbols. The upshot of this is that we can focus on the base game without being dragged hither and yon like you can find with some all-singing, all-dancing titles, and with the Wild substituting for all symbols (except Scatters) he is one monkey on whom we will always be glad to clap our eyes. The crazy-looking Clown Scatter brings his own loopy benefits, with all Scatter wins multiplied by our total credits staked.
Summary
Roll up, roll up! This slot is like a time machine that takes us back to the glory days of the circus, when animal rights were just a glint in Linda McCartney’s eye. Well, at least all of these animals look as though they are enjoying themselves, which is much more than you can say for a real circus of its type. The good news for us is that, even without scores of extra bonus features as you might find in a modern online slot, this title still manages to be well worth a spin.
