Super Bowl Sunday delivered a classic showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, and what a game it was! Millions of viewers tuned in worldwide for the American football scores, the Superbowl half time show, and the sheer excitement of Superbowl 2025. Ultimately, though, it was the Eagles’ night as they defeated the defending champions 40-22 in New Orleans.
After a season of close games, the Chiefs’ luck ran out in New Orleans at Superbowl Sunday. The Eagles put Kansas City into a pretty early 10-0 hole, something QB Patrick Mahomes isn’t unfamiliar with, but the deficit became a disaster when Mahomes threw a pick-six to the Eagles’ rookie CB Cooper DeJean. Mind you, it was his birthday, maybe the Chiefs were just feeling generous? Regardless, when given the chance to stem the bleeding before half time, Mahomes threw another interception which led to… you guessed it! Another Eagles touchdown.
Down 24-0 at half-time, things were looking bleak for the Chiefs. In contrast, the Eagles looked assured, confident and executed their plan to perfection. When it was time for rapper Kendrick Lamar to take the stage, the Eagles knew they could relax and enjoy the show.
Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show was a serious mix of celebration and defiance. Throughout his set, Lamar teased the crowd with his Drake diss track, “Not Like Us,” a song with a billion Spotify streams and five Grammys, despite an ongoing defamation lawsuit from Drake. Ultimately, he performed the song, self-censoring the most controversial lyric – but still pointedly calling out Drake’s name. The performance, likely seen by over 120 million viewers, also featured Serena Williams and SZA. Lamar’s set, staged on a giant noughts and crosses board, explored themes of ego and self-doubt. Samuel L. Jackson, as Uncle Sam, critiqued Lamar’s performance, highlighting the tension between artistic expression and mainstream expectations.
While some found Lamar’s lyrics too dense and were disappointed in his setlist lacking his civil rights anthem “Alright,” the show was undeniably electrifying, featuring hits like “Humble” and “DNA.” A protester briefly disrupted the finale, unfurling a combined Palestinian and Sudanese flag, though the NFL later commented that this was a member of the 400-person cast who took part in the show.
Rumours of a Taylor Swift cameo proved unfounded, though she was sitting in the stands alongside other celebrity attendees including Paul McCartney, Stormzy, Lady Gaga, Doechii, Paul Rudd, and Winnie Harlow. Prior to being linked with Kelce, Swift is known to be an avid Eagles supporter, meaning it was probably a good Super Bowl Sunday for her regardless!
At one point, it seemed that Swift was being booed at the stadium where almost 80% of fans were there for the Eagles. Perhaps this was a petty jab at her boyfriend, Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs, or perhaps it was another example of everyone’s favourite hate train. As far as we are concerned, turning up to support your boyfriends football team isn’t quite a boo-able offence.
Boo-able offences certainly include the prospect the Chiefs were facing when the game resumed after Lamar’s performance: were they about the become the first Super Bowl team ever to be held scoreless?
Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 257 yards, but all three of his touchdown passes came when the Chiefs were already trailing 34-0. Travis Kelce, Mahomes’ most dependable receiving target as Kansas City won three Super Bowls in the last five years, caught four passes for 39 yards.
The Chiefs’ key success was keeping Eagles’ star running back Saquon Barkley relatively quiet. While that would have sounded like a winning strategy heading into the night, it barely served to stop the bleeding. Eagles QB Jalen Hurts stepped up to silence anyone who questions his passing game, throwing an unbelievable 46-yard touchdown pass to seal the defeat for the Chiefs. Whilst Mahomes found both DeAndre Hopkins and Worthy to score in the final three minutes, it was too little too late.
