How can the same story be told time and time again? It’s something that we ask the big bosses in Hollywood all the time, but it’s also something that gaming developers are guilty of too. However, unlike its Hollywood counterparts, re-imagined Slots or new takes on familiar stories are actually well worth their money. Microgaming leads by example with its new take on the tale of Red Riding Hood, giving us a darker experience on Wicked Tales: Dark Red Slot. But it’s not all doom and gloom, especially with prizes up to 5,000 times our stake.
Gameplay
There’s no fancy-free foraging in the forest on Wicked Tales: Dark Red, as this slot puts a sinister twist on the traditional fairytale. A five reel, 25 payline slot takes us into the dark woods with eerie symbols, including Red Candles, Gold Coins, Pendants, Wolves, and Red herself as the high payers. Card values from Jacks through Aces make up the lower paying symbols, but each are deftly designed, showing that the royals have got their eye on little old Red. Speaking of which, she isn’t so little anymore.
In fact, this depiction she’s definitely grown up and is going through a rebellion stage and going out far too underdressed for her grandmother’s liking! The wolf better watch out. Our reel layout is clumped together in groups of threes, but once our eyes have made the adjustment we can appreciate it thanks to the Wandering Reels function. These reels stop in one of three positions and consist of massive blocks, essentially bigger versions of symbols, which help create more winning combinations. The journey through the woods keeps getting more and more exciting.
Bonuses
When the Wild comes into play during the Wandering Reels, we enjoy a generous boost to our chances of landing wins. Even better, the multiple bonus features add fairy dust to this tale. The Wolf’s Wheel Bonus triggers when three Full Moon Scatters appear anywhere on the reels. We spin the wheel to see what prizes we can land. It could be a cash prize (get in!) or even another bonus round.
For instance, if we land on the Treasure Chest, we enter the Forest of Fortunes Pick Bonus, giving us another chance to pick a cash prize. Each time we make a selection, the multiplier increases. If we get all ten prizes, we scoop a x10 multiplier on all our gains. If, during our wolfy wheel round we trigger the Free Spins, we begin with nine free spins. But it gets better…if we land on another high paying symbol, the free spins are replaced by that symbol and the wolfish wins wing our way once more.
Summary
Little Red Riding Hood isn’t so little any more. She’s done with all that wolf business and quizzing her grandmother on her facial features. Instead, her journey through the woods is actually made more interesting by the wolf, with his Wolf’s Wheel Bonus activating all the other features. It’s an interesting take on a classic story. It is considerably darker and we’re not sure who we’re rooting for. But when the bonus rounds can be re-triggered and we can win up to 5,000 times our stake on every free spin, we simply don’t care who gets eaten.
