Jake Paul faces the toughest test of his career when he steps up to face former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua on December 19.
What was originally supposed to be an exhibition for the “Problem Child” against undefeated-yet-undersized WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis has suddenly turned into a bout of real intrigue. “Tank” was forced out of the event due to ongoing legal issues ahead of the proposed matchup in November, with AJ announced as his unlikely but timely replacement.
The YouTube star Paul has defied critics to establish himself as a legitimate pugilist since turning professional in 2020. Having initially specialised in fighting other influencer boxers and ageing MMA stars, he looked impressive last time out against 63-fight veteran Julio César Chávez Jr. That unanimous decision victory led Paul to be elevated to #14 in the WBA Cruiserweight rankings, making him eligible for a potential future world title fight.
Anthony Joshua, meanwhile, is a step up in both class and size for Paul, whose sole heavyweight outing to date was an exhibition against a 58-year-old Mike Tyson last year.
“AJ”, despite being in the twilight years of his career, represents a genuine threat to the influencer’s ascent into legitimacy. After being soundly beaten by Oleksandr Usyk twice in 2021 and 2022, Joshua came back with a four-fight winning streak, including a brutal knockout of Cameroonian MMA veteran Francis Ngannou.
That winning run was ended when he was knocked out cold for the first time in his career by Daniel Dubois last December. Although his chin may be compromised, Joshua has 25 of his 28 victories by knockout – with far heavier hands than Paul is used to trading with.
With a significant natural size advantage for AJ, the contest has an upper weight limit of 245 lbs, and will be contested over eight rounds with 10oz gloves. Paul is expected to give up 15-20lbs to his British opponent, as well as 5″ in height and 6″ in reach.
Taking place on Friday, 19 December, Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua will be streamed live on Netflix, and coming to viewers from the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida.

Jake Paul vs. AJ: Predictions & Fight Picks
Olympic gold medallist Joshua has built his fame and fortune on the elite punching power he possesses. While many argue he’s now a fighter on the slide, his knockout ability remains undeniable – just ask Francis Ngannou. With a significant reach and size advantage over Paul, AJ is sure to prove the toughest test the “Problem Child” has faced to date.
Jake Paul will be looking to exploit some of Joshua’s often-criticised vulnerabilities, including a perception that his stoic, occasionally robotic style struggles against lighter, more agile opponents. Expect to see Paul take lessons from AJ’s losses against Andy Ruiz and Oleksandr Usyk and work the in-and-out angles to wear his heavier foe down.
For his part, AJ needs to press home his vastly superior experience, fighting smartly and not being dragged into low-IQ plays he’s been prone to do when hurt in the past, like brawling toe-to-toe. Utilising his huge reach, not getting flat-footed and setting Jake up to feel his punching power behind the jab will be his key to victory.
The longer the fight goes on, the more you start to favour the younger star more. Don’t expect Joshua to hang around too much in there – though impatience could also be his downfall.
Jake Paul
Age: 28
Height: 6’1”
Reach: 76″
Record: 12 wins (7 knockouts), 1 loss
Anthony Joshua
Age: 36
Height: 6’6″
Reach: 82″
Record: 28 wins (25 KOs), 4 losses
Although Joshua is the overwhelming favourite amongst the pundits and the bookies alike, some notable commentators have come out in favour of Paul.
Long-time nemesis Tyson Fury said earlier in the year that Joshua was a “spent force”, and that the “bulky” Jake would dominate and knock out the Brit. Former AJ stablemate Moses Itauma has also backed the Cleveland, Ohio native to get the victory.
As expected, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, is calling things a very different way. He said: “The bell’s going to go. AJ’s going to go out, take the middle of the ring, and he’s going to unload the heaviest artillery on Jake Paul’s chin he can as quickly as possible, and he’s going to knock him spark out.”
At Casino Kings? We anticipate an early stoppage for Joshua, but see his power diminishing in later rounds if the fight looks like going the distance.
