When NextGen gave us Gorilla Goes Wild we didn’t think King Gary the Gorilla could get any better. But he has. In the hugely successful slot sequel, Gorilla Go Wilder, Gary returns. As do the advancing levels and unlockable bonuses that made the first Slot so popular. This time round we get expanding paylines, Mystery Symbols, Wandering Wilds, Multiplier Zones and the opportunity to win up to 10,000 times our stake. And it all takes place on luxurious tropical islands. Lush.
Gameplay
In a similar vein to the original, Gorilla Go Wilder whisks us to an exotic location. This time round we’re heading to tropical islands, all gloriously depicted in crystal clear HD. So too are the main graphics, including King Gary who joins us again as the main mascot on the left of the screen. The symbols from the first slot return – Toucans, Monkeys, Skunks and Gold Coins as the higher payers and the card values 9 to Ace to make up the numbers. This time round they’ve had more than just a fresh lick of paint, with each of them (including the card values), showcasing the shiny talent of NextGen’s game designers.
Set across five reels and 25 paylines, each spin sees the animals whirl across the screen before taking their place. We get funky little animations as we land winning combinations and the calypso music playing in the background adds to the tropical vibe. Gary also appears as the slot’s Wild and can give us 50 times our stake when we land five of him on a payline. Are we seeing double? Must be all those bananas.
Bonuses
The Shell Respin feature is a randomly triggered bonus which sees shells fall down the screen, landing in position on the reels. We then get a cash prize based on the number of shells and times it re-triggered. Not bad for a random base game bonus! Even better is the Bonus Island feature – the staple of the slot. We basically start on the Tiki Bar level. However, if we trigger the Gary’s Gift feature at random, or if we land three or more Bonus Symbols, then we’ve unlocked a trigger. When we’ve got four of them we have access to the Crystal Cave. Seven takes us to the Green Jungle, 10 to the Waterfall, 15 to the Spooky Jungle, 25 to the Purple Jungle and 30 to the Sunset Beach (no, not that Sunset Beach). Each time we open up a new island, we get a different background setting and new bonuses. These include expanding paylines (up to 200!), Mystery Symbols, Expanding Wilds, Multiplier Zones – the list goes on! Carry on through to the end and there’s the chance to win 10,000 times our stake.
Summary
Gorilla Go Wilder certainly lives up to its name. It takes on its predecessor and ramps it up a whole load of notches. Not only will slots fans enjoy the range of bonuses, fun visuals and giant monkeys, but the unlockable levels give it a true video game feel. Which is sure to make us go bananas. Sorry…we couldn’t resist that one.
